Identity Affirming Hair Grants FOR KIDS!!

Hair•Color•Art is offering hair grants for youth ages 8-18 to help build youth confidence and affirm youth identities. Read on to learn about rules and application guidelines.

Purpose

Many of today’s youth are growing up and developing their sense of self in settings where identities are contested. However, research continues to demonstrate that positive self-identity in pre-adolescence and adolescence is the basis for self-esteem and confidence later in life.  The Hair • Color • Art (HCA) believes that hair care and styling choices are crucial parts of an individual’s ability to positively self-identify. We also recognize that the cost of many of these services is unaffordable for youth, particularly those from marginalized communities (including LGBTQIA+ youth, BIPOC youth, and youth from economically disadvantaged communities). Therefore, HCA has launched a hair care and service scholarship program to cover the cost of hair services for youth ages 8 to 18, with particular emphasis on reaching Ithaca’s marginalized youth communities.

How it Works

  • Youth interested in receiving hair services as a part of the scholarship program at HCA will submit an electronic application or a paper application that can be picked up at the HCA Salon in Ithaca.

  • To help us serve a diversity of candidates, the scholarship application includes the option to share information regarding race, ethnicity, gender identity, and economic status. These questions are optional and will not be independently verified. All information received will be kept private.

  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and will be awarded quarterly (March, June, September, and December). Dollar amounts and the number of scholarships awarded will be based on the funds available.

  • Applications will be collected and reviewed by an independent cohort selected to support the mission of the program. Selected awardees will be notified by phone and email within 7 days of the cohort's award decisions.

  • The scholarship award amount will vary depending on the services requested in the application and the funds available and will have a maximum retail value of $250.

  • Successful applicants must redeem their scholarship for services within 6 months of accepting the award.

  • Individuals may apply once per quarter, but there is no limit to the number of times an applicant may apply or the number of scholarships an individual may receive. However, preference may be given to first-time applicants.

  • Preference will be given to youth who identify as LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, economically disadvantaged, or as a part of another marginalized community.

Rules

  • Youth must have the permission of a parent or legal guardian in order to receive hair services. A signed permission form must be received before services can be rendered. The permission form also includes photo releases allowing HCA to use photos of recipients and services received in HCA marketing materials, promotions, and on social media.

  • Youth must be aged 8 to 18 as of the date of the application.

  • Awardees will be assigned to an HCA stylist based on stylist availability and style/color preferences.

  • Awardees must accept the award by phone or email within 10 business days of the scholarship offer. Any award not claimed within this timeframe may be reassigned to another applicant.

  • Awardees must schedule a free 15-minute consultation with their HCA stylist to discuss styling and color preference no more than 30 days prior to service and no less than 7 days prior to service.

  • Awardees must redeem their scholarship within 6 months of accepting the award. Any scholarship not redeemed within the allotted timeframe will be forfeited.

  • Awardees who fail to show up for a scheduled consultation or appointment may have their scholarship forfeited.

  • The scholarship is non-transferable and has no cash value.

Important Things to Note

  • Hair services including single process color, bright colors, highlights, cuts, and styles are temporary and require ongoing maintenance to maintain. Expect the results of service to last 4-8 weeks depending on a hair care routine and service rendered.

  • It is important for awardees to schedule a consultation with their stylist to discuss hair service preferences. Some hair services require multiple visits and numerous steps to achieve desired results. (i.e. white hair, silver hair, black to blonde hair). Services requiring multiple visits or costing more than $250 are not included in this scholarship opportunity. Visit http://www.haircolorart.com/pricing for a range of pricing for various services.

  • At this time, hair scholarships are only redeemable at HCA for services offered by the stylists on staff.
